Waitlisting FAQs

How does waitlisting work?

Students who attempt to register for a class that is full may put themselves on a waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis. When an open seat becomes available, an email will be sent to the GCC email address of the student at the top of the waiting list. The student will have 24 hours to add the class – either online in your myGCC account or in person in the Records Office or any of our Campus Centers.

The open seat will be reserved for that student and no other student may login and register for that seat during that 24-hour time period.

If the student does not respond, the next student on the list will be notified and have 24 hours to respond.

What are the prerequisites for waitlisting?

Students must meet all of the course prerequisites and requirements in order to sign up for a waiting list.

Where will you send my email notification?

An email will be sent to your GCC email address issued by the college.  If you do not have a GCC email at the time a seat becomes available, the email will be sent to your preferred email address that you provided the college on your application.

How do I sign up for a waiting list?

You may register for a waitlist online, in your myGCC account, or in-person at the Records Office or at any of our Campus Centers.

What happens if I don’t register for a course within 24 hours after receiving an email notification?

If you do not register within 24 hours from the time the email was sent, you will automatically be dropped from the waiting list. The next student on the waiting list will move to the top of the list. For this reason, it is highly recommended that you check your GCC email at least twice a day.

May I get on the waiting list for more than one section of the same course?

Yes. Although you may not register for two or more sections of the same class, you may add yourself to the waiting lists of more than one section of a course. For example, you may be registered for a course, but you would like to take the course at a different time. The system will allow you to stay in your current section and also get on the waiting list for additional sections of the course. If you are notified via email that a seat is now available in a different section, you must first drop the class for which you are registered, and then you may register for the section in which you were previously waitlisted. As a common courtesy to other students, it is expected that you will drop yourself from any classes or waiting lists that you do not intend to take.

May I get on the waiting list for a class that has a time conflict with another course?

Yes. Although you many not register for courses with time conflicts, you may add yourself to the waiting lists of courses that have time conflicts with courses for which you are registered or with other courses that you have waitlisted. If you are notified via email that a seat is now available for a waitlisted class, you must drop any course for which you are registered that has a time conflict before you may register for the waitlisted course.

How does waitlisting work with the tuition payment deadlines and the drop for nonpayment?

If you have an outstanding balance after the tuition due date, you may be dropped your classes due to nonpayment. If you are dropped from your classes, you will also be dropped from any waiting lists.

As long as your account balance is paid in full, or covered by anticipated financial aid or an active online payment plan, you will not be dropped from your classes or waiting lists due to nonpayment. After the tuition due date and drop for nonpayment seats may become available for registration.  Students at the top of a waiting list will be the first to be notified and have the opportunity to register for any seats that may have opened as a result of the drop.  Payment is due upon registration.

If you are dropping and adding classes in different parts of term (i.e., Full term, First 8 Week, Last 12 Week, Last 8 Week) after the start of the semester, please be aware that the SUNY Tuition Refund Policy will apply and you may incur percentage charges.  Students may drop and add classes in the same part of term on the same day (swap) without incurring percentage charges for the dropped class.

At what point does a waiting list go away?

All waiting lists will be discontinued after the first week of classes. After the first week, an instructor’s signature is required to add a course.

I received a waitlist email, but when I tried to register I couldn’t because of a registration hold. What’s wrong?

All registration holds must be cleared prior to any registration activity (this includes waitlisted classes).

I accidentally dropped my waitlisted class. How do I get back in?

As long as you are still within the 24 hour window you can add the class by going to the Add or Drop Classes screen in Banner. You will then need to type in the CRN in the Add Classes Worksheet and click submits changes. This will register you for the class, and not put you on the waiting list.
