VET124: Veterinary Pharmacy and Pharmacology

Catalog Description: Provide study in the area of commonly used veterinary drugs and medications. Emphasis will be placed on the classes of drugs, their use, potential side effects and contraindications, calculating drug doses, administering and dispensing drugs and medications, legal issues and record keeping. Overview of common large animal diseases and the techniques used in treatment and care of these patients. The student will become familiar with common diseases with regard to epidemiology, incubation period, contagiousness, therapeutic treatments, measures of prevention, zoonotic potential, and expected outcome. Common behaviors and how they affect animal handling and management, large animal nutrition, poisonous plants, and toxins that affect large animals will be discussed. VET268: Anesthesia & Surgical Nursing

Student will develop foundational knowledge of anesthetic agents, along with a working knowledge of common surgical procedures in small and large animals. Emphasis is on the preparation of the surgical patient, the care of the patient both pre- and post-surgery, pain evaluation, and record keeping. CPR and recognition of emergency situations, and the potential for human and animal hazards associated with anesthetic drugs and anesthetized patients. VET279: Vet Radiology & Dentistry

Introduces the basic principles for the understanding and production of diagnostic imaging including radiographic imaging, MRI and ultrasound. VET280: Veterinary Parasitology

Catalog Description: An introductory, multidisciplinary course to the common internal and external parasites of large and small animals. Life cycles, pathologies, diagnostic protocols, treatment, and management control will be studied while integrating anatomy and pharmacology. Students will be able to provide client education concerning parasite prevention, treatment, management, and public health zoonoses. Laboratory work will include microscopic identification of parasites along with the application of appropriate diagnostic tests used in veterinary practice. VET290: Clinical Experience 3

This is the third and final course in a series of three clinical experiences where observation and performing the tasks of a Veterinary Technician at an animal facility in such areas as surgery, anesthesia, treatment, radiology, laboratory and general facility operations are continued. 94 clinical hours will be completed over the duration of this course. The primary objective is to introduce the concepts of veterinary medicine and the duties and responsibilities of a Veterinary Technician by seeing and participating in actual cases. Familiarization with and appreciation for the role of the Veterinary Technician in a practical, applied atmosphere.

VET291: Clinical Case Study 5: Reproduction, Urogenital, Urinary, and Endocrinology

This course will cover the normal and abnormal reproduction of companion and large animals and diagnostics of the reproductive systems. Normal and abnormal urogenital conditions, endocrine diseases and their diagnostics are examined. Particular attention will be placed on the role of the Veterinary Technician in the diagnosis and treatments of the reproductive, urologic and endocrine systems.

This course is a continuation of the clinical case series of courses. This course surveys the anatomy and physiology of the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems, Special Senses and the Immune System. Common diseases are covered along with the physical assessment, relevant diagnostic procedures and common treatments for diseased affecting the Nervous System, Special Sense Organs and the immune system.

VET293: Capstone Review: Didactic Knowledge & Psychomotor Skills

This course is a cumulative review of the program. The focus is on the incorporation of hands-on clinical experiences with prior clinical case coursework. This course provides the opportunity review actual medical situations encountered during their clinical rotations. Proficiency of skills and knowledge will be assessed with practical application of tasks learned in the previous courses and clinical experiences. Emphasis will be placed on the knowledge, role and responsibilities of a licensed Veterinary Technician. This course will review Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) domains and the final assessment will be a cumulative exam designed to simulate the VTNE.

VETLB3: Lab for VET 223

VET LB3 is the application of didactic instruction for VET 223 and a required co-requisite. Skills and performance in VET LB3 are assessed as a component of VET 223 and therefore, must be successfully completed in addition to all the requirements for VET 223. Students will apply hands-on knowledge of restraint and handling, injections and blood draw techniques. Students will participate in care, feeding, cleaning and enrichment of animals housed in the vivarium. Prerequisites: VET 100, VET 101, BIO 123 and BIO LB3 each with a grade of “C” or higher.
